Despite what the City Paper seems to think, Bloomingdale is probably the best neighborhood in D.C. I say this not because I am biased and live there, but because unlike a lot of neighborhoods in the District, it really feels like a community. I couldn't even think of a place where so many people stop and say hello, strike up conversations or just act really friendly in general when you are walking down the street. I think it may have something to do with the abundance of Coffee shops and Liquor stores but I'm not entirely sure. One of the most popular places in the hood is Big Bear which serves ultimate hangover cure coffee and grilled cheese. I like Big Bear a lot, the hipster staff is always good for a sarcastic comment (scoffing at my roommate Andy for reading the Washington Post instead of the NY Times) and the coffee is pretty good too.
Even Cooler than Big Bear however, is the Bloomingdale Farmers' Market. Now you may be asking yourself "how is a farmers' market possibly cool?" Well clearly you haven't been to the Bloomingdale Farmers' Market. Every Sunday from 10 to 2 they have a mix of vendors hocking fresh fruit, veggies, meat and bread. Not to talk it up too much but it is the most baller farmers' market that I have ever seen in my life. Amish people regularly walk up, see the farmers market, hang their heads in shame, and quit being Amish on the spot. Yeah its that good.

tony: gotta ask you, if you live here in the hood, why are you saying big bear is in eckington?!? it's in bloomingdale. i mean, you start a whole post about bloomingdale, and then you say our most popular place isn't actually in the neighborhood? i'm a little confused/sad.
either way, welcome to the neighborhood (i think).
rbecause big bear says their in eckington on their website! I also was confused and sad but i had to update
where does it say on their website that they're in eckington? talk to lana and stu (the owners) and they'll tell you straight up they're in bloomingdale. plus, if you look at the right-hand side of their website, under the "neighborhood" heading, it says "history of bloomingdale". no mention of eckington there.
apologies looking a map and seen that Florida separates Bloomingdale and Eckington. Post updated again! but fyi it says it right under the website link when you look at big bear on google. sorry for the mistake.
tony: well, it just goes to show that you can't believe everything that you read. just because google says something doesn't make it true!
check out this map. north capitol separates bloomingdale from eckington, not florida ave. the labels that google and yahoo place on their maps for our neighborhoods are not accurate.
haha wow thanks for correcting me yet again. btw I checked out your blog and its pretty cool, can you keep me posted on upcoming community meetings and stuff like that?
if you want to be up on everything going on in bloomingdale (especially when meetings are happening), join scott roberts' listserv. email him ( scott at scott-roberts.net ) and he'll get you right on the list!
thanks for the compliment, i appreciate it!
Imgoph,
I agree with Tony. I think that it was an honest mistake and I think that its terrible that you would not welcome him into our community with open arms.
Glad to be your neighbor (I think)
aw, c'mon stu, i'm just joshing. me and a couple of the eckington bloggers have a long-running "feud" over which neighborhood is better.
check this from today, for example.
welcome to bloomingdale, though!
