St. Elizabeth's: DC's very own haunted insane asylum

This weekend I took a tour of St . Elizabeth's in Anacostia. I heard about it from Dcist awhile ago and it didn't fail to creep the hell out of me. I imagined going back and getting a job walking around as the night watchman patrolling all of the haunted buildings by myself. Here are some sweet pics!

i was on the tour too. damn damn shame that place isn't being used as a college campus like they proposed in the late 90s!

Pretty - you know, in a creepy sort of way.

Complete with a Hitchcock Hall, I see - somehow seems fitting! Pretty eerie-looking place.

Isn't this where DHS is proposing to establish it's headquarters...and uh, coincidence??? Me thinks not...

Yup DHS is planning to develop the site as well as construct an exit ramp from 295. Im not sure how many original structures they will retain but they said on the tour they plan to restore a good portion. It just a shame if the public isnt allowed access to this awesome place.

tony: don't forget to mention that DHS's plan isn't to just restore some buildings. they want to add over 5 million square feet of usable space to the approx. 1.5 million square feet of space that exist in the current buildlings. PLUS 2 million square feet of parking. it would utterly destroy the feel and layout of the place.

tony: which tourguide did you have? the GSA person, or the DC preservation league person? i was taking the DCPL tour, and it was quite clear that they are not happy with the GSA plans for the site!

(who is this jamesulan guy, and why does his opinion matter?)

Ah my tour was a mix of people from GSA and PL they clearly disagreed with each other and let everyone on the tour know it...it was actually kind of entertaining
